Similar Names, Different Techniques
Despite their similar-sounding names, Ashiatsu and Shiatsu are distinct massage modalities with different approaches. At Spine Body Collective, we offer Ashiatsu massage, a Westernized technique that combines deep pressure with broad, relaxing strokes.
Explore The Deeper Origins and Meanings
Shiatsu is a traditional Chinese-influenced Japanese technique. It’s similar to acupressure—the word “shi” means finger, and “atsu” means pressure—and focuses on pressure points.
Ashiatsu, “ashi” meaning foot, and you’re using the feet for pressure, was developed by Ruthie Hardee, combining a mix of Indian and Asian techniques. She included more traditional studies to make it more like a massage.
The Difference Is In The Touch
In traditional Shiatsu, practitioners use thumbs, elbows, and sometimes feet to apply direct force to specific points along the body’s meridians, similar to acupressure.
Ashiatsu uses smooth, gliding foot movements using a special lotion. The therapist holds onto stability bars above the table, using broad, flowing strokes to stretch out the fascia instead of any one point.
The Feeling and Experience
Shiatsu often creates an intense, focused force that may feel therapeutic but is acute and can be uncomfortable. With Ashiatsu, the experience is more fluid: “Instead of just stepping down on a body part, I’m gliding with deep broad pressure like I would an arm or hand. Many people describe it as feeling like giant paws moving across their body.”
Which Is Right For You?
Shiatsu might appeal to you if you prefer targeted pressure point work based on traditional medicine principles. If you’re seeking a deep, broader force that feels soothing rather than acute, Ashiatsu offers a unique solution.
